Consultation

Children and youth need strong, supportive connections and relationships in order to thrive! Our team can work with parents/guardians to better understand their child's behaviour, learning and/or social-emotional strengths and needs.  By understanding where the child is "coming from", we can work together to develop effective supportive strategies.

Skill Teaching & Counselling

Children and youth can face problems from time to time related to learning, social relationships, making difficult decisions, or managing emotions such as feeling depressed, anxious, worried, or isolated. Our team can help children and youth understand and learn skills to cope or resolve challenges that they may face.

Please note that at this time we are unable to accept referrals for one-on-one skills teaching/counseling due to a lengthy waitlist.

Psychoeducational Assessments

A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive process intended to identify strengths and areas of need among numerous skills and abilities, such as cognitive and academic functioning, behaviour, and social-emotional skills.  Conducted by a licensed psychologist, a psychoeducational assessment typically involves:

  • Interviews to obtain information regarding the child's early development, school history, social-emotional functioning, and behaviour, as well as family and medical history. Interviews may be conducted with parents, school personnel, and the child/youth.
  • Record reviews to determine school history of achievement and interventions implemented.  Review of work samples and any other assessment findings may also be helpful.
  • Direct assessment session(s) with child/youth to administer tests of intellectual functioning, learning, memory, and language.  On average, 5 hours will the spent working directly with the child/youth. Sessions can be spread out over a few days.
  • Rating scales may be completed by the child/youth, parents, and school staff to get a better understanding of the child's behaviour, social and emotional functioning at home, school and within the community.
  • Feedback session with the family to share the results of the assessment.  Practical recommendations will be provided based on the child's unique profile of strengths, challenges, and learning style.  These recommendations may pertain to academic interventions or programming, behavioural interventions and/or social-emotional functioning.
  • A comprehensive written report is provided to the family, which summarizes assessment results and recommendations.  We are also available to meet with school personnel or other professionals, as requested.
