What is a psychologist?
A psychologist is a professional who has obtained 6-12 years of university studies in understanding how people think, feel, and behave. In New Brunswick, psychologists are licensed by the College of Psychologists of New Brunswick and must have received a graduate degree in psychology (masters and/or doctoral degree), as well as supervised work experience.
Psychologists have unique training on the administration and interpretation of psychological assessments. A psychologist does not prescribe medication like a doctor or psychiatrist, but helps youth, their families and support system develop a greater understanding of the youth’s strengths, skills and needs. Psychologists may also collaborate with other professionals when needed to ensure wrap-around support for the individual.
What is a school psychologist?
School psychologists have specialized training (coursework and practical experiences) relevant in the areas of education and psychology. They apply their knowledge of mental health, learning, and behavior to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally.
Do I need a referral from my doctor to see a psychologist?
You do not need a referral from your doctor to see a psychologist. However, some extended health insurance plans do require a doctor’s referral for reimbursement. You are strongly encouraged to check with your health insurance provider regarding the specifics of your coverage and whether a doctor’s referral is required.
What age range do you service?
We work with children/youth from preschool to post-secondary age.
Are you currently accepting new referrals?
At this time, we are accepting referrals for psychoeducational assessments only. We are unable to accept referrals for one-on-one skills teaching/counseling due to a lengthy waitlist. This website will be updated when we are able to open our waitlist again.
How long is the wait to see a psychologist for a psychoeducational assessment?
Our current wait time for assessment is approximately 6-8 months.
With respect to consultation and direct skills-teaching (when the waitlist opens again), it is difficult to provide estimated timeframes due to the volume of clients on our caseloads, the current waitlist, and the potentially long term nature of this service.
What if I cannot make my appointment?
We kindly request 24 hours notice through a phone call, voicemail, or email if you are unable to keep your appointment. Please note that cancellations with less than 24 hours notice will be charged half of the hourly rate and missed appointments will be charged the full fee.
